“I started seeing images as shapes. Looking at a photograph as a whole and then wondering what else it could be by ripping it apart is an exciting way to approach art,” reflects Nate Reiman of Minneapolis’s 4iphoto. “Rebuilding those ripped apart images opens up visual worlds that question what we see.”

Shaping a Vision

Commercial photography, portraiture, drone navigation, tattoo design, graffiti, and skateboard culture inform Nate’s creations. “I’ve worked with food, interiors, furniture, and people for commercial images as a photo assistant. This experience provides a foundation for my current creative work,” shares Nate.

Currently on a forced physical sabbatical due to a severe knee injury, Nate maintains an active role in the skateboard community he entered when he was 14. His vibrant photographs celebrate the diversity of skateboarders navigating the Twin Cities’ streets and skate parks. There’s something particularly poignant about a still image of an action that lasted less than a second. 4iphoto’s skateboard series captures the potential bliss or defeat of any given trick.

“Being a part of communities where I respect the people that are a part of it and am grateful to call them my peers brings me joy,” states Nate. Nate’s boundless personal energy along with this peer support set the foundation to refocus on photography through a new creative lens.

Building a Space

The name of his personal studio, 4iphoto, is a nod to his signature glasses. With four eyes, multiple lenses, and a push to capture his surroundings in a fresh way, the name felt like the right fit.

4iphoto’s studio is in the basement of the Pilllar Forum Cafe at 23rd and Central in Minneapolis. Nate curates a rotating show of emerging artists at the Pilllar. “I love giving people a place to shine. It can make all the difference in helping a new artist feel validated in their work.”

Nate started work in the photo industry in 1998. Currently he prefers to work with small businesses to bring their role in the community to life. Working with both still and video content, 4iphoto prides itself on working within the budgets’ of community-based businesses to give them content they’ll be proud to use.
