Does your favorite pancake mix or locally-crafted Does your favorite pancake mix or locally-crafted brew filter stormwater runoff, improve water quality and work towards a healthier future for Minnesota’s rivers?

If it carries the Perennial Percent label, it already has.

What, you ask, is this label?

This new food and beverage identification highlights both an ingredient and a regenerative agricultural practice at the same time. This label empowers consumers to choose a climate positive ingredient and encourages increased agricultural production of the product.

Managed by @thelandinstitute Institute in Kansas, Perennial Percent is the first label for consumer packaged goods (CPGs or finished products that you’ll find on grocery or liquor store shelves) that identifies the inclusion of a perennial grain as a part of the recipe. Kernza®, an intermediate wheatgrass, is the rising star of this labeling program.

@bangbrewing in Saint Paul and @sturdiwheat in Red Wing include Kernza across their product lines. Initially both Sandy and Jay Boss Febbo of Bang Brewing and Missi and Suzanne Blue of Sturdiwheat developed recipes that highlighted Kernza’s naturally nutty flavor and cinnamon undertone.

Sturdiwheat is a Minnesota heritage brand that has produced thousands of bags of pancake and bread mixes in downtown Red Wing for over 80 years. “There’s a lot of pride in being a Minnesota company,” states Missi Blue, who now stewards the company along with her mom Suzanne Blue. “Adding Kernza to our ingredients is another way of supporting the state and the community that supports our business.”

Within a 30,000 bushel grain bin in the middle of Saint Paul, Sandy and Jay Boss Febbo of Bang Brewing know where their grains and hops they brew come from. When asked why, Sandy answers, “Individual actions matter.” Jay nods and adds, “We look to be as responsible as possible. Every life decision is an opportunity to consider how you can do better, how you can minimize your footprint and environmental impact while increasing the benefits for the community.”

CEDA and RBIL may be two of Minnesota’s best kept CEDA and RBIL may be two of Minnesota’s best kept secrets.

Let’s change that.

Meet eight rural entrepreneurs bringing fresh energy and strong business development into their communities.

These eight diverse businesses have all worked with the coaches and resources available through CEDA’s @ruralbusinessinnovationlab program. Founded by @ceda_usa , RBIL is a cohort-based, entrepreneurial program that redefines the narrative of rural decline.

Clear Water Nitrate, @fiddleheadknob , @getbentzfarm , @mtry_co, @rusticrootsfarmmn , @simpleciderco , @tysginseng and @woolletsllc all live and work in their rural communities. Their commitment to sustainability and creative problem-solving is exciting.

What began as a small pilot program has evolved into a dynamic ecosystem of partners, mentors, consultants, funders and alumni working together to support rural entrepreneurs. Each year, they expand this network with intention, connecting business owners to new opportunities, industry experts and regional resources that would otherwise be out of reach.

Now in its third cohort cycle (with applications for the fourth opening in January 2026), RBIL is a community where peers navigate challenges and celebrate triumphs together. Beyond the program coaching and workshop sessions, its alumni network fosters ongoing support.

Wondering whether RBIL is a good fit for your business? They welcome applications from business owners located in rural areas who produce a scalable innovative product or service. RBIL wants to know where they can best help solve the problems your business faces.

How do the RBIL alums feel about their experience? Nick Revoir from Simple Cider Company shared the following feedback after a coaching session, “Your push and motivation helped so much this week! You give me (and likely everyone else) so much energy to be rockstars on our businesses. There is no way I would have gotten close to this far without your help.”

Contact Cameron Payne cameron.payne@cedausa.com at RBIL. Visit https://www.cedausa.com/ruralinnovation/ for a program overview.
