This is quite literally food for thought. I rece This is quite literally food for thought.

I recently discovered the YouTube series @spork.the.system by Cassidy Schnell.

The Infinite Glitch looks to get a second life out of high quality ingredients. It’s a way of finding food and fertilizer in the things we generally consider to be waste. In this episode it starts with grain and ends with the fertilization power of human urine.

This most recent episode highlights the interconnected systems of @bangbrewing, @netzro.us , @thecentralmix and @fixx_coffee .

Real change requires that we do something different.

One product’s byproduct waste can be another system’s treasure. The spent grain from St Paul’s Bang Brewing becomes a reharvested grain that takes advantage of the protein and fiber left over from the brewing process. Sue Marshall mills those high quality spent grains into flour.

Shelley Santrach of The Central Mix and Fixx Coffee uses up cycled ingredients in her catering business and coffee shop. Applying her “better than” theory, Shelley uses these grains to create flavor-full products that don’t follow the usual recipe.

Urine as fertilizer? I don’t want to spoil the ending for you.

Highly recommend taking ten minutes of your day to learn about these Minnesota innovators. The narrative in the Spork the System episodes that I’ve watched is smart, succinct, and encourages us to undermine the status quo. Local business owners who we’ve celebrated on Meet the Minnesota Makers are part of the regional food system changes we need for sustainable production for the generations to come.

Minnesota sustainable farming as the headline for Minnesota sustainable farming as the headline for this episode of America’s Heartland on @pbs @twincitiespbs

This segment highlights the partnership between farms practicing sustainable or regenerative agriculture and CPG companies.

Luke Peterson of A-Frame Farm in Madison, MN explains the value of increasing diversity in our agricultural and food production systems in order to improve the chance of survival for the plants, soil, animals, and people involved in the food system.

Regenerative farming, simply put, are practices that prioritize soil health. This in turn improves the nutritional value of the plants and helps offset the challenging impact of extreme weather.

This clip highlights the necessity of balancing the health of people and the land itself for a richer ecosystem that nourishes all. Learning about the partnership between A-Frame Farm and Simple Mills demonstrates the value in knowing our food and knowing our farmers.

I am grateful for PBS highlighting the real stories of the food producers that feed our communities. These stories have real value.

Highly recommend taking five minutes of your day to watch this video and explore some of the other farmers celebrated in this series.
